Following their opening day away defeat, Welling United again paid the penalty at home to Bishop's Stortford.

If conceding two spot kicks at Oxford was bad, losing to a 94th minute one at home hurt as much, if not more.

Mark Goldberg's team were dealt an early blow by an injury to Harry Crawford causing him to miss out.. Warren Whitely came in to the starting line up playing wide right with Sam Hatton slotting into a more attacking position.

When the action started, Joe Benjamin made space for himself but was slow in getting a shot in and Dean Leacock made the block.

Chris Lewington then did superbly to stop a Dominic Green free kick with his legs after it took a nasty deflection.

Oliver Sprague had Welling's first goal effort but his volley flew over.

Jamie Slabber then did well to knock down a long free kick but Hatton could not find the power to concern Blues' goalkeeper Joe Wright.

Tambeson Eyong made the most of a Welling attack that broke down with a marauding run down the right wing. Having got to the bye line, he cut back before curling a shot that clattered back off the far post.

Francis headed a Hatton corner over and a Leacock header from Sprague's delivery from the other side bounced down and then up into Wright's arms.

Two more corners in quick succession followed, the second of which was headed home by Slabber from another Hatton delivery, just one minute before the break.

While the visitors were licking their wounds, Welling almost got in again. Whitely looked as if he was away but Paul Rodgers made a brilliant last ditch tackle and then got up quickly to repeat the dose as Sprague looked to feed on the scraps.

Neither side made changes before the start of the second half.

Immediately after the break, Welling put themselves under pressure conceding a needless free kick and a great delivery found Eyong at the far post. His header across just missed the far post but he vented his anger at some team mates for not following it in.

His frustration showed moments later when crashing into Sprague, earning him a lecture..

Another free kick put more pressure on the Welling goal but the wall did its job at the expense of a corner.

Danny Waldren then fed on weak Stortford clearance but struck his volley two well, straight at Wright.

Goldberg then made a change, bringing on Jonte Smith for Whitely.

Seven minutes later, Bishop's Stortford equalised. Another strong Eyong run ended with him firing home from 20 yards. Sadly, his celebration, running straight to the Welling bench before screaming in a coaches face, was rather unsavoury.

Two more Wings were introduced for league debuts, Pierre Joseph-Dubois replaced Hatton and Archie Johnson came on for Sprague.

Neither side produced the quality needed to produce clear cut chances as attacks became more and more hurried until Claudio Vilcu drew an excellent save out of Lewington in injury time.

As the game drew to a close, former Wing Jon Nouble went through and was brought down by a last ditch tackle by Mitchell Nelson. Bradley Garness-Wood stepped up to take the penalty and claimed all three points with a calm finish.

The Wings are in home action again on Saturday, with Weston-super-Mare the visitors.
