Against a Millwall team of reserves and trialists, Mark Goldberg started Welling United's final pre season game with his potential strongest eleven.

In the Millwall squad were three players who have played more times at Park View Road than all bar one of the Welling first eleven. Tom King, Josh Carmichael and Noah Chesmain have all had loan spells with the Wings.

After a promising start, Welling came close to going ahead just shy of fifteen minutes in. A deep cross caused King problems under pressure from Harry Crawford but Oliver Sprague was unable to keep his side foot volleyed follow up under the bar.

Four minutes later, Welling attacked again and this time they made it count. Danny Waldren played a perfect through ball that put Crawford clear of Paul Rooney and the defender's awkward challenge gave referee Ian Fissenden an easy decision in pointing to the spot.

Sam Hatton stepped up and sent King the wrong way.

Another good move between Crawford and Hatton almost put Jamie Slabber away but Sid Nelson made a crucial saving tackle.

Still Welling looked to attack and Crawford broke through once more but didn't have the angle to beat King.

Yet another chance came and went when Slabber met Hatton's corner with a clean header that flew over with King beaten.

Fred Onyedinma finally had a shot for the visitors but his attempted curler from twenty yards was well off target.

Onyedinma got in twice more before the break but two good tackles from Mitchell Nelson and good positioning at the near post by Chris Lewington kept Welling's lead intact.

There was still time for Carmichael and Nelson to shoot off target for Millwall before the break.

Immediately after the break Crawford caught the defence sleeping but his powerful drive went just wide of the far post.

Alfie Pavey then got in behind the Welling defence but the ball wouldn't come down quickly enough and Lewington was out to block.

Waldren then fired a free kick well over for Welling before both teams had great opportunities.

Chesmain put in a fantastic cross that found Pavey in acres of space at the far post but the Lions' centre forward failed to hit the target with his header.

Then Crawford sent Hatton away but James Brown made a brilliant clearance off the line.

As the rain continued to teem down and multiple substitutions were made the game became scrappier but there were still chances.

King made a fine save from Leacock before Welling's Brown made a vital block to thwart Millwall's Brown.

Kyron Farrell was off target with a free kick for Millwall then Jamie Philpot had an effort saved.

Millwall continued to look for the equaliser and Chesmain volleyed just over from 25 yards.

One more chance came Millwall's way but Harry Donovan side footed wide from the edge of the area well into injury time.

Victory should give the Wings a boost ahead of their opening league game at Oxford City.
