Russell Slade admits Charlton have much to work on after a surprise defeat to Bromley at Hayes Lane.

National League Side Bromley took the lead through George Porter on 14 minutes, before winger Blair Turgott curled a fine free-kick past Stephen Henderson.

The Addicks halved the deficit after the break as Brandon Hanlan volleyed home a corner, but Neil Smith’s side held firm to seal an impressive win.

Slade thought the visitors started the friendly well but criticised “ridiculous” ball retention from his side.

He said: “It’s not about results really at the minute but you’re still looking for a high level of performance.

“I thought we started okay, we had the ball, and then it was like we got fed up of keeping the ball and moving the ball.

“We gave the ball away, ridiculously so, then we got punished. I’m not quite sure what we were doing with the free-kick.”

The former Cardiff and Leyton Orient manager, who joined Charlton in June, added: “There’s lots of work to be done.

“In the second period, apart from the first five minutes, I thought we completely dominated really but didn’t get enough goals from the possession and the opportunities we had.”

Charlton’s goalscorer, academy graduate Hanlan, signed a two-year contract extension at the club in April.

Slade was delighted for the Chelsea-born forward to impress in a team with a mixture of first-team regulars and triallists.

“I’m really pleased for Brandon,” 55-year-old Slade added.

“It was a great finish and it’s great when you put one of the young lads in and they do something a bit special and that was nice for him.”
