Neil Smith believes pre-season friendlies against Charlton and Millwall are ideal opportunities for his Bromley squad to test themselves ahead of the new season.

The Addicks, who suffered relegation from the Championship last season, travel to Hayes Lane on Tuesday night while League One play-off finalists Millwall take on the Ravens on Saturday.

Both clubs will turn up with a mixture of first-team stars and fringe players, and Smith is fully aware of the challenge they will pose his side.

He said: “We’ve got two fantastic friendlies coming up against Charlton and Millwall. They should be great occasions for both sets of fans.

“Both games will be difficult, of course, even though the opposition will probably have a mixture of first-team players and younger guys.

“They will all want to impress Russell [Slade] and Neil [Harris] so it will be a test.”

Smith will be challenging his players to compete with their opposite number and says he will even be putting himself up against the League One bosses.

“It’s about seeing what you’re capable of,” the Bromley manager said.

“Not only as a team but also individuals. It’s going to be a gauge of where we are.

“Our lads will be up against players who made it to Wembley last season or played in the Championship.

“Our players should look at their opposite number and try to compete on a one-on-one level.

“I’ll be putting myself up against Russell, who is a fantastic, experienced manager and Neil who did a great job last season and trying to match them.”
