Although not helped by some curious officiating, Welling United disappointed their travelling supporters with another woeful display at Altrincham.

After the departure of Dean Frost, potential new owner Mark Goldberg took caretaker change and made multiple changes as he took his first look at the players that he had inherited.

Ade Yusuff had the first goal effort but his shot took a big deflection before rolling into the hands of Tim Deasy.

Yusuff then had another chance but his low shot was saved comfortably.

Josh Ginelley had an effort blocked by Sam Corne for a corner then picked up a short delivery and cut in but his shot was deflected over.

Michael Rankine had a shot blocked by new captain Kevin Lokko before Yusuff struck another shot that did not bother Deasy.

Rankine then missed a great chance when James Lawrie's pass split the Welling defence but his shot from inside the area clipped the bar on the way over.

Another Rankine chance came and went when he fired wide then George Porter had an effort deflected away for a corner to Welling.

Jordan Sinnott broke the deadlock when sent free through the middle and he finished clinically.

Referee John Busby then made the first of two highly controversial first half decisions. Welling substitute Victor Caicedo fouled Jake Moult and was cautioned. Moult then pushed his face into the face of Caicedo yet somehow escaped with a yellow card.

Sinnott then had a fierce effort well saved by Marek Rodak but in the follow up an effort was fired at Ian Gayle at point blank range. It struck may have struck him on the arm but it was so close that he was helpless to stop it. The assistant referee flagged, then made a strange gesture and a penalty was awarded.

Maybe not entirely convincing, Rankine's effort had enough on it to beat Rodak and send the hosts in two up at the break.

Hardly surprisingly, the Welling players were unhappy with the referee as they left the field but could not blame him when falling further behind soon after the break. This time James Lawrie was sent clear and his scuffed shot hit the ground and looped inside the far post.

Harry Lee, on his long awaited return, hit an effort that was deflected to such an extent that it dribbled into the hands of Deasy.

Rodak did well to hold a Rankine header before Kevin Lokko looped a header over from Luke Wanadio's cross.

Damian Reeves then enjoyed the benefit of the poor officiating when his clear push on Corne was not penalised allowing him the freedom of the penalty area to head Sinnott's cross home.

Two further chances came and went for the holsts as Rankine twice shot wide.

On a rare foray forward, Ibrahim Kargbo blasted just wide from 25 yards.

Deep into injury time, Altrincham made it five when Rankine fed on a long punt forward and lobbed the out rushing Marek.

Welling United: Rodak, Corne, Taylor, Lee, Gayle, Lokko, Porter (Daniel 57), Kargbo, Bakare (Caicaido 23), Yusuff (Kabba 53), Wanadio. Unused substitutes: McEntegart, Nortey.
