There was a touch of after the Lord Mayors Show following the excitements and exertions of the last week as the Wands went down to defeat to Romford at Hayes Lane in a game that never reached any great heights.
Perhaps understandably after the rigours of confirming a playoff place on Tuesday night, Cray appeared rather jaded and the visitors took advantage to record their fourth straight win which ensured safety for Romford for next season.
The best chances of the first half fell to Romford when Chris Taylor was played through but pulled a shot wide.
The games decisive moment came just before the half hour when Romford took the lead with rather a soft goal. From a right wing corner, Jamie Dicks’ ball went right across to the far post where central defender James Ishmail prodded the ball home from close range. Cray keeper Nick Blue saved well from Tom Anderson as Romford continued to press
Cray played better in the second half and with more fluency but didn’t create too many chances with Karl Dent strike’s comfortably saved by Michael Gooch. The best chance of the game fell to Leigh Bremner who was played in by Dean Carpenter but his close range volley was bravely saved by Gooch.
Cray: Blue, Cox, Basey, Leader, Payne (Powell), Dawson (Carpenter), Roberts, Dent, Bremner, Mascoll (Frieter), Tajbakhsh: Subs: McKinlay, Faulkner
