Showing a never say die attitude, Welling claimed a point at Southport having been three goals behind.

Partly through their injury situation, Welling came into the game with an unchanged side from the one that lost at Dover Athletic on the previous Tuesday.

Chances were few and far between in a nervy first half between two clubs showing a shortage of confidence.

Mark O'Brien met a Gary Jones corner with a header but it lacked power and Barney Williams was able to make a comfortable clearance.

Ian Gayle was then on hand to clear after a big goalmouth scramble in the Welling area.

Michael Bakare had Welling's first clear cut chance but his sweet volley from twenty yards was too straight and Max Crocombe made the save.

Live-wire Louis Almond fired in a shot that was half saved by Marek Rodak and Williams cleared then, at the other end, Luke Wanadio shot wide for Welling.

Jones brought a fine save out of Rodak and Gayle again cleaned up.

After 36 minutes, the hosts went ahead when Andy Wright headed a corner back across goal and Mike Phenix finished at the far post.

Within a minute, Welling had a great chance to equalise when awarded a penalty but Scott Kashket struck weakly and Crocombe made a comfortable save.

In injury time, Welling had a good shout for another penalty when Reece Harris appeared to be felled but nothing was awarded.

Harris had the first opportunity of the second period when he wrong-footed Adam Blakeman but shot just the wrong side of the near post.

Kashket then attempted to make up for his earlier indiscretion when cutting in but O'Brien did well to block at the expense of a corner.

Somewhat against the run of play, Southport scored a second when Liam Nolan's cross was only headed out as far as Josh Thompson, and his crisp 25 yard volley gave Rodak no chance.

Shell shocked Welling conceded again two minutes later. Rodak did well to touch over a shot from Wright but Blakeman's deep corner was met by O'Brien who knocked home from less than a yard out.

Craig Westcarr might have made it four but bundled wide when it came off his knee

Bakare pulled one back with a fine individual effort and Welling laid siege to the Southport goal, winning a series of corners.

Eventually one was made to count when Kashket's corner was headed home by substitute Sahr Kabba.

Buoyed by the success, Welling continued to press and claimed an equaliser two minutes from time when another Kashket corner was headed home by Gayle at the near post.

Noah Chesmain looked for an audacious winner with a long shot but Crocombe claimed it and the two teams finished with a point each.

Welling United: Rodak, Williams, Chesmain, Kargbo, Gayle, Lokko, Wanadio (Kabba 79), Nortey, Bakare, Kashket, Harris. Unused substitutes: Taylor, Daniel, Vidal, Adeloye.
