Another hard working performance by Welling United counted for nothing as they came away empty handed from their visit to Dover Athletic.

Despite taking an early lead they were unable to create sufficient openings and again paid the price.

Only two players, Barney Williams and Reece Harris, started the abandoned game on 2nd January and the rearranged game.

Having struggled for goals all season it took just one minute for Welling to go ahead. Michael Bakare was quick to charge down Tyrone Sterling. Once beyond him he had time to look up before curling into the top corner.

Buoyed by their early success, Welling took charge of the early stages and Bakare got through again but shot just beyond the far post.

Noah Chesmain then took a free kick that just clipped the wall and went over for a corner with Mitch Walker struggling.

Walker was less bothered soon after and claimed a long shot from Harris as Welling continued to impress.

He then made a crucial save when Luke Wanadio got in behind and fired low towards the bottom corner.

Sterling pulled up and had to be replaced by Chris Kinnear Jnr. and Dover had to make adjustments but it appeared to work in their favour.

Ricky Modeste fired wide on the half volley but it was still pretty much against the run of play when Dover equalised soon after.

Good industry by Ricky Miller caused Welling difficulties at the back and his driven in cross was met by a crisp finish by Stefan Payne at the near post.

After that, the game became scrappy and a Nicky Deverdics shot went high and wide.

As the end of the first half approached Dover enjoyed their best part of the period and Modeste might have done better but headed Payne's cross over.

Payne then had a chance of his own but Rodak got down well to save his deflected shot just before the break

Five minutes after the break, Dover took the lead. Harris did well to put a nasty cross out for a corner but to little avail as Deverdics' delivery was met by Sean Raggett at the near post and his header flew into the roof of the net.

Increasingly influential Payne then had a shot blocked bravely by Ian Gayle at the cost of a corner as Welling struggled to get into the game.

Eventually, they did enjoy some pressure and Payne showed his defensive qualities when clearing off the line from Nortei Nortey who met Harris' deep corner with a first time effort.

Although Welling started to enjoy more of the possession with Dover looking to hit on the break they struggled to create clear cut chances.

Williams had a low drive well claimed by Walker although the one time Welling custodian was a bit fortunate when he punched out a Harris corner and it rebounded of Sahr Kabba but just wide of the post.

As much as Welling enjoyed the latter parts of the game, they couldn't create another clear cut chance and their long winless run continued..
