After a cagey ninety minutes of football, the match between Welling United and Cheltenham Town came alive in extra time.

Having more than held their own against the league leaders, Welling thought they had won the match when Luke Wanadio opened his account for the hosts.

However, the Robins showed the never-say-die attitude that is so often a hallmark of top teams when Dan Holman equalised in the fifth minute of injury time.

Scott Kashket came in on loan from Leyton Orient and was given a starting place ahead of Kadell Daniel who was dropped to the bench. James Ferry's return to Brentford and Michael McEntegart's injury in training mean that the Wings were only able to name four substitutes, all attack minded players.

Such has been Welling's difficulty in scoring goals that only Reece Harris in the starting line up had ever scored a goal for the club.

Although clearly the underdogs, Welling started well and came close early on when Nortei Nortey's shot was deflected wide.

Holman missed the visitors' first good chance, heading over from Jack Barthram's cross.

Daniel Parslow then also missed with a header that went too high but chances were few and far between as a midfield battle took place.

Holman was on target with a shot that barely troubled Marek Rodak before Cheltenham made an early change. James Rowe departed after just 33 minutes to be replaced by George McLennan.

Danny Wright came close to breaking the deadlock but was thwarted by a brilliant Rodak double save just before the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, a frustrated Cheltenham manager, Gary Johnson, made a second change replacing Asa Hall with Harry Pell.

Kashket's industry almost created a chance when he half blocked Jonathan Flatt's clearance but, fortunately for the Robins' custodian, it flew away to safety.

As the game moved into the final fifteen minutes, brilliant work by Barney Williams resulted in a chance for Michael Bakare but his rushed effort flew wide.

McLennan thought he had scored the opener from close range after a goalmouth scramble had presented him with a tap in but it was disallowed for offside.

Nortey had a shot saved from Wanadio's cross as the Wings mounted some late pressure.

Wanadio then had a chance of his own but his shot was tipped onto the post.

Sahr Kabba came as a replacement for Kashket with less than three minutes remaining and made an impact just into stoppage time.

Reece Harris took a quick throw into the space where the dissenting Barthram should have been and Kabba took advantage by picking out Wanadio who finished with a crisp shot beyond Flatt.

Their celebrations were as to be expected for a team that had gone 720 minutes without a goal but that proved costly as Cheltenham equalised in the fifth minute of injury time. Holman was presented with one final opportunity and he made no mistake to send his team two points clear at the top.

Welling United: Rodak,Williams, Chesmain, Kargbo,Gayle, Lokko, Wanadio, Nortey, Adeyole (Bakare 71), Kashket (Kabba 87) Harris. Unused substitutes: Vidal, Daniel.
