Bromley interim manager Neil Smith preached the virtues of hard work and preparation following a 2-1 victory over Woking on Saturday.

Smith, who has taken over the club following Mark Goldberg’s exit, was keen to stress that the Ravens’ win was down to graft and effort.

The much-needed triumph brought Bromley’s dismal run of form in the National League division to an end.

Smith said: “We prepared 100%, everything out there today wasn’t just a fluke, we worked really hard on our shape.

“I think we had more chances to actually wrap it up a little bit easier, but the boys have kept me on my toes and gave everyone a bit of a scare.”

Goals from Moses Emmanuel and Adam Cunnington gave the home side all three points after Woking had taken the lead through an early goal.

Smith, 44, was pleased with the spirit and battling qualities on display.

“It was a battle today. You had the elements, the wind and the rain, but we just stayed in it,” he said.

“After going a goal down you could have seen heads drop, but they didn’t.

“The mistake [for the conceded goal] we’ve got to do better at. But then we really took the game by the scruff of the neck, and there were waves of attacks.”

Bromley put together a ten-match unbeaten run earlier in the season but then suffered a horrendous run which saw the club drop to the bottom-half of the table.

But caretaker boss Smith does not believe the struggle was down to a lack of ability.

He said: “I am so delighted for the players.

“They have not lost their ability from what we were doing earlier on in the season. It’s just a lack of confidence, a lack of belief.

“I think we’re just getting that little bit of momentum and that little bit of belief back. We’ll take it one stage at a time.

“The boys have got to believe how good they are, because they’re the same players who went on that unbeaten run.”

Smith was coy when quizzed about the possibility of staying on as manager beyond the end of the season.

“I’m just going to take one game at a time, the board have been fantastic,” he said.

“They’ve helped me, they’ve been supportive. I know there’s people applying for the job and they’re keeping me informed.

“I am just taking one game at a time. I want to keep this club up.”

Saturday’s win moved Bromley up to 14th, nine points clear of the relegation zone.
