Thamesmead Town manager Terry Spillane has admitted his side’s 2-0 win over Enfield Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday was a momentous day for the club.

The Ryman League Division One North team inflicted a shock defeat on hosts Enfield, who sit 16th in the Isthmian Premier Division.

The victory ensures Town are just one game away from qualifying for the First Round proper for the first time in the club’s history.

“It was a massive day for us,” Spillane said. “It was a great win and we weren’t fortunate, I thought we fully deserved it.

“They were on a really good run at home and their manager has just won the monthly award, so on paper it was all against us.”

The hosts missed a penalty with Thamesmead leading 1-0, but Spillane insists the visitors deserved the win.

“That could have changed the game but our performance overall warranted the victory,” he added.

“We had three or four good chances on top of the goals. Personally it was nice, after a few months here it’s beginning to feel like home. It was a great day for myself, the players and the club.”

Thamesmead face a daunting trip to Hungerford Town in the Third Qualifying Round.

Spillane said: “Their record is great, but records are there to be broken. It will be another huge day for the club.

“They play at a higher standard than us but last week we proved that we are capable of upsetting anyone.”
