Showing great determination, Welling United returned from Cumbria with a hard earned point from their encounter with Barrow.

Few teams take anything away from Holker Street so despite having gone ahead, they can still be happy to make the long journey home with something to show for it.

Having served his one match suspension, Harry Osborne returned to the starting line up with Kevin Lokko dropping to the bench in an otherwise unchanged Welling line up.

As happens often, the teams spent the first ten minutes sparring for openings before Andy Cook had a couple of opportunities from crosses.

First he headed over from an Andy Haworth cross. Then he nodded wide under pressure from Dan Pilkington's cross.

Untidy defending gave Cook the opportunity to break through and Harry Osborne brought him down just outside the area. Pilkington stepped up to clip the free kick over the wall only to see it come back off the bar.

After that the tempo dropped and chances were few and far between.

Good football by Welling finally allowed them to create an opening but Xavier Vidal failed to get a clean connection on his shot and saw it blocked.

Ricky Wellard then burst through but shot wide before the hosts again looked to break the deadlock.

Haworth got on the end of a 45 yard cross field pass but volleyed over from inside the area.

In the 42nd minute, the deadlock was broken when Sahr Kabba's brilliant touch sent him away from Danny Livesey. Joel Dixon made a great save but it rebounded off defender Steve Williams and back into the net.

Another Haworth effort flew over before Reece Harris sent Kabba away again, but the Wings' joint leading striker thrashed over.

Niall Copperthwaite shot over for Barrow, then Williams was unable to keep a header down from a Pilkington corner.

At the break Osborne was withdrawn, replaced by Lokko.

Once again, Welling's failure to see out the first ten minutes after the break cost them. Pilkington's deep cross should have been cut out but Cook was allowed to rise at the far post and head home from very close range.

Both teams made changes up front around the hour mark, and Afolabi Obafemi almost made an immediate impression for the Wings when beating Livesey but he allowed him to get back and make a crucial second tackle.

Wellard had a shot saved for Welling as the visitors looked to enjoy their best spell off the match however they almost got caught on the break.

Jason Walker flicked on a huge punt through but Cook was well offside when slotting home.

Tom King then made the save off the match when getting down low to keep out Cook's snapshot.

Cook then came even closer when rising to head another Pilkington cross against the far post with Ben Jefford cleaning up the rebound.

Harris looked to have a chance when the defence stood still awaiting the non-existent offside flag but Dixon was out sharply to clear.

Harry Lee then shot wide as Welling looked to grab a late winner.

Walker could have then got himself into trouble. Having just been booked, he raised his hands to a Welling player while the referee was busy cautioning Sam Corne.

However, he almost made his escape count when spinning in the last minute, but King tidied up.

There is now a break for the Wings in the league as they start their cup campaigns.
