Cray’s interest in the FA Trophy came to an end as East Grinstead Town defeated a rather patched up Wands side at Hayes Lane. The visitors went three goals up and despite a late rally from Cray which almost snatched a replay, it was East Grinstead who went through.
East Grinstead took the lead after 14 minutes when Junior Kaffo lobbed the ball over Nick Blue from just outside the penalty area.
The visitors notched their second in the 35th minute when Greg Cundle rolled the ball into the net from Bill Parkinson’s cross.
In the 43rd minute, it became three nil when Cundle curled in a fine shot into the bottom right corner to leave Cray with a mountain to climb.
On the stroke of half time, Cray did pull a goal back through Dane Moore who’s shot was deflected through a crowd of players into the net.
Cray pulled another goal back in the 81st minute to when Mike Frieter set up James Duckworth who hit a composed finish to give Cray hope once again. Despite late pressure it was East Grinstead who held out and advanced in the competition.
Cray are next in action on Tuesday evening when AFC Hornchurch travel to Hayes Lane for a 7.45 ko.
Cray: Blue, Pyke, Basey, Roberts, Carpenter, Lodge (Powell), Dawson, Moore (Garcia), Frieter, Duckworth, Ouani: Subs: Payne, Dent, Faulkner
