Sahr Kabba fired Welling United to victory over FC Halifax Town with two goals just before the break.

However, it was not the routine victory that might have been expected as the Wings entertained the Shaymen team who are yet to record their first away point of the season.

Coming into the game, a calf injury to Reece Harris caused him to sit out the game with Kabba coming in for Welling's only change to the eleven who had won their last two matches. Halifax were unchanged from the team who had drawn with Gateshead on Tuesday evening.

Matt Glennon was the first goalkeeper called into action when tipping over from George Porter following good work by Ricky Wellard.

Matty Brown fired over at the other end after a free kick came back off the defensive wall.

Wellard fired wide from a long way out before Brown rose unmarked from a corner for Halifax but missed the target.

Kabba presented Wellard with another opportunity that he curled just wide of the far post but play was soon back to the other end and James Bolton should have done better from Jordan Burrow's cross.

Kingsley James finally tested Tom King in the Wings' goal but his effort lacked the power to trouble the custodian.

James thought he had put the visitors ahead before the break. His initial effort from another corner was fumbled away but in the scramble that ensued he managed to get himself into an offside position before scrambling home.

Bolton was given a free header from another corner that King claimed before Welling went ahead.

Ben Jefford's cross was met by Sam Corne whose header was fumbled by Glennon into the path of Kabba and the Wings' striker slid home from close range.

Before Halifax had a chance to compose themselves, Welling scored again.

After a long ball was well held up by Wellard, he found Kabba who fired a fierce shot. Although it was blocked, Kabba was first to the rebound and belted it into the back of the net.

It probably put a different complexion on the two team's half time discussions but any hopes that the Shaymen would be demoralised were ill founded.

King launched a huge punt out that went wide on the first bounce, then Wellard was again off target.

But Halifax were soon on the attack again. Brown was again off target with a header from a free kick then James had a shot blocked by King at the near post.

Having missed that chance, James then became provider when his cross found Burrow, but the striker headed over.

Glennon made a comfortable save from Wellard before Burrow was cautioned for diving in the area.

Welling came close to adding a third when a goalmouth scramble involving Kabba, Wellard and Xavier Vidal ended with a hack off the line.

George Porter was then robbed of his first Welling goal as his header was also cleared off the goal-line.

Kevin Lokko headed wide as Welling continued their search for a third.

However, there were still opportunities at the other end and James should have done better than to sky a cross field pass by Josh MacDonald into the road.

Porter cut in from the Wing before shooting low but Glennon made a great block at the near post. Wellard followed up but was thwarted by another excellent Glennon block.

Overlapping Bolton fired in an effort at the near post that King held well before Porter's drive was deflected wide at the other end.

Late efforts by Wellard and Porter were off target but Welling it did not stop Welling from claiming their third win in eight days.
