Both Welling United and Chester came into the game hoping for back to back victories following good wins on Saturday, but it was the Wings who took their chances to claim the three points.

Unsurprisingly after their win at Gateshead on Saturday, manager Loui Fazakerley named an unchanged starting line up. However Sahr Kabba returned from suspension and took his place on the bench in place of Archie Johnson who had been released to play in the F.A. Youth Cup on the previous night.

Chester manager, Steve Burr, also named the same eleven after recording a fine win against Eastleigh.

After an early Reece Harris shot flew well over Chester enjoyed the best of the first fifteen minutes.

John Rooney arrowed a shot towards the bottom corner that Tom King did well to get down and turn round the post.

Rooney had another effort deflected wide then Tom Shaw broke through but strong defending kept him out at the expense of another corner.

Jordan Chapell then found Shaw in lots of space but he headed over when well placed.

It was then the turn of Welling to create some openings. Ricky Wellard played in George Porter and Jon Worsnop made a good diving save.

Wellard went wide with an acrobatic effort then shot wide after feeding on a clever Porter pass.

Craig Hobson looked like he was going to break the deadlock when he ghosted in at the far post but Nortei Nortey's presence was sufficient to stop him getting in a clean shot and King was able to field.

Chapell's deflected pass gave Rooney space but he shot just wide from twenty yards.

At the other end Porter burst through but had no help and shot across the face of goal.

Ben Jefford came in at the far post to net but Porter was called for offside as he flicked on Xavier Vidal's free kick.

Ross Hannah came close for Chester when meeting Chapell's cross with an overhead effort that came back off the post.

That miss proved costly as Welling went ahead on the 43rd minute. Vidal sent Harris away with a delicious pass. His first touch took him wide that in so doing pulled Worsnop out and Harris took full advantage with a perfect chip.

George Thomson had an effort saved before the break as Chester went for one last hope of going in level.

A long range Wellard effort almost caught Worsnop out but the troubled Chester goalkeeper scrambled his effort wide.

Jefford came close again from the corner but Johnny Hunt was alert to clear off the line.

Kevin Lokko then headed beyond the far post from a free kick as the game became more stretched.

Thomson cut in but fired wide for Chester but Welling continued to look for the second to give them breathing space.

Enjoying a more attacking role, Wellard again tested Worsnop with a stinging drive that he could only beat out, fortunately for him, wide of the following up Porter.

Yet again, Wellard made space for himself but his effort curled wide of the far post.

Worsnop produced a brilliant tip over to thwart Vidal but it was to no avail as he made a horrible hash of the resulting corner, dropping it to allow Wellard to bundle home off his knee.

To their credit Chester kept coming and the Welling defence, marshalled by Michael Chambers, made a number of crucial blocks and tackles to keep the visitors out.

Substitute Kane Richards went down in the penalty area under Lokko's challenge but referee Rob Whitton made a big decision and cautioned for him for diving.

Hannah's hit the woodwork for the second time when his flick came back off the post.

Deep into injury time, Hannah netted a consolation from Sam Hughes' cross but Welling were not to be denied.

Welling United: King, Nortey, Jefford, Lee, Chambers, Lokko, Corne, Vidal (Kabba 82), Porter, Wellard, Harris. Unused substitutes: McEntegart, Taylor, Awotwi, Obafemi.
