Sam Corne's spectacular 25 yard special rescued a point for Welling United against Tranmere Rovers.

In truth, that was the least they deserved in a game in which they created far more openings.

Manager Loui Fazakerley was pleased to be able to restore Sahr Kabba to the starting line up with Ricky Wellard missing out.

Kabba was involved in the first attack of the game when he broke before passing out wide to George Porter. He held up well before laying back to Ben Jefford whose cross was met by the head of Xavier Vidal, but he was unable to get enough power to trouble Scott Davies.

Vidal then sent Kabba away, but Davies was out swiftly to smother the returning striker's effort.

Reece Harris then collected Corne's pass before hitting a skimmer that Davies did well to hold with Kabba following up.

Harris then had a shout for a penalty when Ritchie Sutton blocked his shot with his upraised arm. Corne followed up with an effort that was also blocked by a desperate lunge.

Eventually, the visitors came into the game with a shot from Andy Mangan that was deflected wide by Michael Chambers.

Jefford over-hit a free kick that almost caught out a back pedalling Davies who then collided with Matt Hill to give Vidal an opportunity, however the Rovers' keeper recovered to save at the expense of a corner.

At the other end, Mangan's trickery gave James Norwood a shooting opportunity but the England C international sliced well wide.

Back came Welling, and despite being held, Kevin Lokko got on the end of a Harris free kick but was unable to reach a position to allow him to get his header on target.

Davies thwarted Kabba again by coming out quickly before the half time interval.

Failure to convert their first half chances proved costly when they conceded within a minute of the break. Welling goalkeeper, Tom King, failed to deal with a corner and Lois Maynard took full advantage when heading into an empty net.

Once they had recovered their composure, Welling started to look for openings again. Again, Davies was out quickly as Porter chased a Harry Lee through ball.

Porter then fired in a long range shot that was again well held by Davies.

Jay Harris came close for Tranmere before making a crucial clearance off the line at the other end.

Liam Hogan's diving header, almost a spectacular own goal, presented Welling with a corner. Lee's delivery was met with a firm header by Lokko that was cleared off the line by Harris. Porter followed up with a fizzer that went just over.

Norwood might have made sure of the points soon over when meeting a near post corner unopposed, but he headed over.

Hogan could have been embarrassed once more when slicing a Jefford cross over then a Steve Jennings shot for Tranmere disappeared into Danson Park.

Sutton's indiscretion made things tougher for the visitors moments later. Waiting for a throw in, he flung his arm into the face of Kabba. Although the referee did not see the incident, his assistant did and the hapless defender was dismissed.

Tranmere narrowed their formation, giving Harry Osborne more license to attack and a cross required a desperate interception by Hogan.

It looked as though Tranmere would hold out until Corne scored the goal that earned the Wings a point. Moving forward from deep, he fired in a shot from 25 yards that flew in off the post with Davies helpless.

Encouraged by his success, Corne almost won the game with another long range drive that Marcus Holness diverted just beyond the post.
