New look Welling United opened their 2015-16 campaign with a hard fought victory over newly promoted Guiseley.

Saar Kabba celebrated his Welling United debut by capping an impressive display with the only goal of the game.

He wasn't the only Wing making his league bow. Goalkeeper Tom King (on loan from Millwall) joined other new signings Kevin Lokko , Xavier Vidal and Ricky Wellard in making their premier league starts for Welling.

Ten minutes had passed before the first opportunity fell to Guiseley but Zac Thompson failed to test King.

At the other end, Kabba showed his skills before laying off to Wellard whose cross to the far post was met by Reece Harris' header wide.

Adam Boyes fired a shot that flew back off the crossbar before Welling came back when Harris and Kabba combined to feed Tashan Adeyinka. He went for placement over power and saw his shot blocked.

Wellard, with a free kick, and Sam Corne both fired over for Welling whilst Boyes did likewise for the visitors.

Five minutes before the break, Welling punished a Guiseley foul to the full. Wellard's deep free kick was nodded back into the six yard box for Kabba to score a true striker's goal.

Shortly after the break Adeyinka fired over following good work by Harris.

Then followed a period of quiet punctuated by substitutions that included George Porter's first Wings' league appearance before Loui Fazakerley's strong header sent Adeyinka away. The tall striker controlled well before bringing a save out of Steven Drench.

Dangerous Wayne Brooksby broke clear and sent in a cross but the outstanding and unselfish Xavier Vidal defended superbly under great pressure.

Ben Jefford then broke away from Brooksby and created a shooting chance for himself but fired well over.

Boyes had a fantastic chance to equalise and took his time but failed to hit the target when he should have done better.

Afolabi Obafemi replaced Adeyinka as Welling made their second change before Michael Chambers rose to meet Wellard's corner. However Drench was equal to the task and saved.

Guiseley then created another good opening when Brooksby squared to Boyes who set up substitute Liam Dickinson but he, too, failed to test King.

In what should have been the final minute of injury time, Fazakerley went down badly and after treatment, had to be helped off the pitch accompanied by derisory chanting by some uncharitable visiting supporters. Kojo Awotwi came on for his Wings league debut.

After six minutes of injury time, the visitors had one last chance when penalty area pinball allowed Gavin Rothrey a shooting opportunity. Although he finally registered his team's first effort on target, Harris was in the right place to make a fine goal-line clearance.

Three points and a clean sheet gives Welling a confidence boost ahead of their journey to Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.
