Beckenham Town have launched a ‘Hall of Fame’ event to honour seven legendary players from the clubs history – including an FA cup winner.

The event took place at their Eden Park Avenue ground and welcomed players, family members and friends to a pre-match reception, where plaques were unveiled and items from the clubs archives were displayed.

The Hall of Fame was opened by Tony Flood, a journalist who covered Beckenham matches through the 1960s.

Mr Flood, who also wrote the celebrity book ‘My Life with the Stars’, hailed the event: “I fully appreciate what the Beckenham Town players being honoured today achieved, some of them at the very highest levels.

"Unfortunately most of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ have now passed away so it is great to see them remembered.”

The magnificent seven refers to Pat Saward, Ray Potter, Bill Lloyd, Frank Morris, Jan Wawrzewski, Lee Fabian and David Wentworth.

After leaving Beckenham, Saward helped Aston Villa win the FA Cup and represented Northern Ireland in the 1954 World Cup.

Most of the others also went on to have successful football league careers with the likes of Millwall and Crystal Palace.

Beckenham press secretary Geoff Ward, who was responsible for providing the historic background, said: “It was an event which clearly meant a great deal to the most important people - the family and friends of the players involved.”
