After two home victories in quick succession, Welling United went into the relegation crunch game ahead of Alfreton Town on goal difference.

Jake Gallagher and Ben Jefford returned to the starting line up for Welling but manager Loui Fazakerley chose to retain Michael McEntegart in goal ahead of Jonathan Henly.

Dominic Vose came close when combining well with Kieron St. Aimie but his shot was deflected wide with Tom Flynn beaten.

Frustratingly, Welling's good start was undone when they conceded a penalty. Harry Osborne slid into a tackle and Karl Hawley's shot hit his hand. After several Alfreton players screamed in the referee's face, he gave Osborne his marching orders. Dan Bradley was not bothered about the commotion, however, and slammed the spot kick home.

Ten men Welling continued to look for openings and St. Aimie fired wide from long range.

Hawley did well for Alfreton and cut in before firing in a low shot that was saved comfortably by McEntegart.

Brilliant play by Niall Heaton created another opportunity but Tom Shaw lashed just over from the edge of the box.

Just before the break, Welling levelled. Sam Corne's pass was flicked on by Jake Gallagher to wrong foot the Alfreton defence and Ross Lafayette chested down, rounded Flynn, and fired home.

Fazakerley made a tactical change at the break replacing St. Aimie with Sam Berry but despite the numerical disadvantage they came out strongly.

Berry's long ball found Gallagher and his lay back was struck sweetly by Vose but a flying Flynn pushed it wide for a corner.

Corne then had a shot blocked from a half cleared corner but sliced his follow up wide.

Flynn had to be alert again to block a Vose near post effort with his foot.

It came as no surprise when Welling went ahead. Vose sent in a deep free kick that Berry headed back and Bush finished at the far post.

James Phillips came on as a sub for the hosts and almost had an immediate impact but fired over.

Second substitute Massiah McDonald did one better, however, and equalised tucking in Hawley's cross.

Phillips fired another effort in that was well turned over by McEntegart as Alfreton looked for a winner.

Third substitute Jake Speight then had a shot saved before Joe Healy screwed a shot wide for Welling.

Lafayette had a great chance when slipped through but Flynn made a sharp save.

Then Lafayette turned provider but Jefford's shot flew wide of the far post.

Yet again, Flynn did brilliantly when Welling opened the defence once more, this time saving from Gallagher.

Although Alfreton won some late corners, they never really threatened and the point Welling won means they go into the final games of the season with their destiny in their own hands.

Welling United: McEntegart, Williams, Jefford, Osborne, Chambers, Bush, Gallagher, Corne (Fagan 86), St. Aimie (Berry 46), Lafayette, Vose (Healy 77). Unused substitutes: Henly, Akinde.
