Charlton Rangers FC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and are hosting some big events to mark half a century of grassroots football.

The club was started by John Commerford while travelling by coach to a Charlton Athletic away match at Birmingham on 4 September 1965.

He suggested to a bunch of ardent Addicks supporters at the back of the coach they should form a team to play on Sunday mornings.

As there was indeed enough interest, they decided to have a practice the following Sunday.

Fifty years on Charlton Rangers has developed into a very well structured club, with a active committee overseen by president Roger Culff and chairman Roy Gambardella.

They field two senior sides in the Metropolitan Sunday Football League, a veterans side (35s and over) and a super veterans side (over 45s).

Next month they will be gracing The Valley pitch on May 10 (12pm) when several members of the original 1965 line-up are hosting a Legends XI inter-club game.

Admission is free.

And on September 5 the club will be hosting a 50th anniversary dinner at the Thistle Hotel near Brands Hatch.

Charlton Rangers are hoping to track down as many of their former players as possible to make this a truly remarkable occasion.
