Welling's run of eight consecutive defeats was arrested when they earned a hard Afought point at Gateshead.

Lack of confidence was evident for the Wings, and conceding an early goal was the worst thing that could have happened.

Joe Healy's suspension forced Loui Fazakerley into a change, and Zach Fagan came in to play in front of the back four. He also chose to bring in Kieron St. Aimie for Rod Young.

Disaster struck for Welling in the opening couple of minutes when Alex Rodman put the Heed ahead.

Craig Baxter broke down the wing but Carl Finnigan was unable to finish and add to Welling's woes.

Finnigan then missed a great chance when not flagged for offside. Although he had plenty of time, he chose to attempt a lob and could only find the roof of the net.

Jamie Chandler shot wide from distance as Welling struggled to make anything from their passing game.

Rodman created space for himself but shot just beyond the far post with Henly at full stretch.

Dominic Vose almost created an unlikely equaliser when James Curtis' interception flew narrowly wide of his own goal.

Vose then flashed a volley over that appeared to have been deflected to all other than the referee.

Early in the second period, the Heed came close to extending their lead but Valentin Gokaj could only clip the bar with his header from John Oster's free kick.

To their credit Welling kept battling and when a corner was only half cleared Jamal yfield surged through before his fierce cross hit Jason Williams but flew just wide of the near post.

Kieron St. Aimie then tried to chip Adam Bartlett before the hosts were reduced to ten.

Jonathan Henly pushed a vicious near post cross wide for a corner but Rodman kicked out as Barney Williams delayed him from taking the corner quickly and was dismissed.

Curtis headed wide of the near post when the corner was delivered.

Nine minutes remained when Welling enjoyed a bit of luck for once. Vose's speculative shot from the right took a wicked deflection and spun over Bartlett and inside the far post.

Sam Corne almost won it in injury time when his low shot was turned over by Bartlett and Sam Berry headed the resultant corner just wide of the far post.

The point will give Welling a massive boost knowing that a win at Lincoln on Saturday could take them out of the bottom three.
