Following their defeat at Dover Athletic on Boxing Day, Welling United' s small squad were good value for their point.

Jon Henly replaced suspended Benji Buchell, Ben Jefford returned from injury letting Chris Bush to move to centre half and Zach Fagan into midfield and Charlie Penny started up front allowing Sam Corne and Kieron St. Aimie to have a rest.

Jamal Fyfield had an early header saved before Jefford did well to keep Jordan Chapell wide so Henly could make an easy save from his shot.

Bush headed over a Jefford free kick before Darrell Berry was booked for a wild challenge. Aristide Bassele headed over from another Jefford delivery.

Jake Gallagher was cautioned before his cross fired over before his cross field pass found Joe Healy but his first time effort flew wide.

Malachi Hudson'a shot was blocked. Gallagher fired over and Bassele curled an effort well over.

Another Jefford free kick caused problems to the Gulls but Charlie Penny's header was saved comfortably by Jordon Seabright.

Henly made another comfortable save from Chapell before Healy had a shot deflected beyond te far post by Berry.

Barney Williams' illness meant he had to be replaced at half time with Sam Cirbe replacing him.

After the break, Torquay came out with far more attacking intent. Henly had to make early saves from Ashley Yeoman and Louis Briscoe.

Ben Harding planted a free kick wide before Bowman had an effort cleared off the line before Henly saved from Luke Young.

Having weathered the storm, Welling had a chance but Bassele was unable to keep his effort down.

Briscoe had a free kick save by Henly but neither team created much in the last 25 minutes although Seabright made a brilliant save from Penny only for the hapless referee to award a goal kick.

Despite being short handed and part time, the hosts finished the stronger but were unable to fashion a further opportunity.
