Six players made their first Welling United competitive starts but they tumbled out of the F.A. Senior Trophy at the first hurdle.

Their team was made up of first team players returning from injury or in need of playing time, and 16/17 year olds from the development squad.

Playing against them, Tonbridge Angels fielded mostly first team players has they came into this match having not played for ten days.

Charlie Penny, who was playing for the first time since injury in pre-season, had a glorious opportunity to put the Wings ahead. Having burst into the penalty area, he was brought down by a combination of James and Nathan Campbell and a spot kick was awarded. He stepped up to take it himself but thrashed his effort over the bar.

Almost immediately, Welling were made to pay when Billy Medlock worked his way through and finished well.

Malik Ouani was inches away from connecting with a deep Jon Nouble cross but Tom Parkinson and Tommy Whitnell both had chances at the other end.

Kieron St. Aimie had his feet taken away from him as he was about to pull the trigger and Folkes was booked for the foul after Parkinson had his name taken for something he said. St. Aimie struck both the free kick and the follow up into the defensive wall.

Two goals in five minutes leading into the break gave Welling a mountain to climb. First Whitnell drove across goal for Medlock to finish then Parkinson rose unopposed from a corner to head home.

Medlock and Parkinson were replaced at the break and Penny and St. Aimie were withdrawn ten minutes into the second period.

Ouani deceived Kyle Merson from a free kick a minute later to reduce the arrears, but has hard as the young Welling team worked, their rarely looked like scoring again, the closest they came when Archie Johnson headed wide from a long Nouble cross.

Jon Henly turned a shot from Alex Tenioua over as the Angels booked their trip to Sittingbourne for the next round.
