Liam Enver-Marum scored a late winner against his former club as Basingstoke Town knocked Ebbsfleet United out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Charlie Sheringham gave Fleet a well-deserved second half lead, but the Conference South leaders fought back and were sent through to the fourth qualifying round by goals from Chris Flood and Enver-Marum.

Steve Brown made one change from the side which drew 0-0 with Eastbourne on Tuesday, with Shane Huke replacing Kenny Clark, while visiting boss Jason Bristow picked the ex-Fleet pair of Enver-Marum and Louie Soares in his starting XI.

Basingstoke entered the fixture on the back of four straight wins, but this form deserted the visitors as Ebbsfleet dominated proceedings and created numerous chances in the first half.

The first fell to Sheringham, who had his shot parried by keeper Stuart Moore.

Billy Bricknell struck the bar on the rebound, but the striker was adjudged offside.

Bricknell, who has already netted five league goals, was played through by Anthony Cook after 11 minutes, only to be denied by a superb save by the on-loan Reading goalkeeper.

Moore made several outstanding stops and when an effort did have him beaten, as Daryl McMahon’s stunning free-kick did, the post came to Town’s rescue.

The league leaders briefly threatened in the closing stages of the first period when Flood’s free-kick had to be turned wide by Brandon Hall and Jamie Brown’s point-black header was pushed away by the Fleet keeper from the subsequent corner.

But the half ended with another save from Moore, who this time kept out Bricknell’s close range effort.

Ebbsfleet’s dominance was finally turned into a lead in the 53rd minute.

Cook dribbled down the wing and delivered a cross which fell to Sheringham, who tapped home for his seventh goal of the season.

Fleet should have doubled their lead when McMahon picked up possession in a great position, but the captain oddly opted to pass instead of shooting and the attack broke down.

The significance of this miss could not have been greater as moments later Basingstoke countered and Flood slammed home the equaliser with a fantastic strike from outside the box.

Ebbsfleet were left rueing countless missed opportunities with just seven minutes remaining as Town snatched a winner when a whipping cross was headed in by Enver-Marum.

Joe Howe was sent off in extra-time for bringing down Lloyd Macklin as he surged through on goal, which epitomised a frustrating afternoon for Ebbsfleet.
