Ebbsfleet United made it three league wins in succession with a comfortable 3-0 success at Farnborough on Saturday.

Goals from Billy Bricknell, Daryl McMahon and Dean Rance gave the Fleet victory, but in reality they had to be nowhere near their best to beat a poor Farnborough side.

Steve Brown made two changes from the side which thrashed Hythe in the FA Cup, with Bricknell replacing Matt Godden up front and Anthony Acheampong returning to central defence in place of Shane Huke.

In his programme notes, Farnborough boss Spencer Day described Ebbsfleet as “a sleeping giant being awoken”.

And those feelings of inferiority were replicated in his side’s performance as the 4-3-3 formation struggled to make much of an impact.

The game started flatly, with a heavy pitch seemingly leaving both teams content to probe rather than attack.

But in the 19th minute, the first opportunity led to the opening goal as a McMahon free-kick from the right found Bricknell at the near post and his well-placed header flew across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

Fleet nearly doubled their lead from a superb free-kick routine in which Charlie Sheringham teed up Aiden Palmer to cross to Anthony Cook, but the winger’s header was comfortably saved.

The half continued with Ebbsfleet dominating possession without ever really creating many clear cut opportunities, but with McMahon stood over every free-kick, they always provided a threat from set-pieces.

This proved the case in the 39th minute when the captain fired in a low free-kick from the edge of the area which deflected off the wall and into the goal.

Farnborough improved in the second half and a fine Courtney Fearn cross found Phil Page, whose shot flashed across goal and wide.

But the Fleet survived the pressure and kept the hosts at arm’s length without putting them under too much pressure themselves until the 66th minute.

Matt Johnson played sub Godden in down the right wing and he cut the ball back for Dean Rance, who finished into the bottom corner from 12 yards to make it 3-0.

Godden and McMahon then both fired over the bar as Ebbsfleet saw the game out without having to exert too much effort.
