A hat trick from Sam Newson was the difference between the teams as Cray were beaten by top of the table Needham Market in the first game in charge for Mike Paye & Gary Abbott.

The first half was an even game but Needham Market proved why they are league leaders by being very sharp in front of goal.  The home side scored on 14 minutes when Ian Westlake’s passed to Newson who controlled the ball well and fired home with a smart finish.

Needham Market went two up on 39 minutes when Newson scored as he converted an excellent first time cross from Ryan Crisp.

Cray came close before half time when Cesc Fakinos’ free kick was met by the head of Shaun Welford and his effort was clawed away by keeper Shaun Phillips for a corner.

In the second half Gary Beckett hit a shot over the crossbar for the Wands before another fine shot from Newson from Darryl Coakley’s cross was well struck on target but brought out a great instinctive save from Darren Behcet.

Needham Market wrapped the game up during stoppage time when the impressive Newson hit a cracking finish from another cross from Crisp.
