Football returned to Park View Road with the annual pre-season friendly between Welling United and Charlton Athletic.

On a warm afternoon, and in front of a healthy crowd, both teams fielded new signings and players unfamiliar to their respective supporters.

Two much travelled strikers scored the goals which gave Conference putfit Welling a shock 2-0 victory over their Championship visitors.

Kieron St Aimie notched a fourth minute penalty and Moses Ashikodi netted with 15 minutes remaining.

Both are looking to impress while trialling with the club and will not have done their chances of securing a deal any harm.

A total of 43 players were used by the two clubs with only Wings keeper Lee Butcher not replaced at half time.

Malachi Hudson had an outstanding 45 minutes for the Wings and his trickery caused the rash tackle from Rhoys Wiggins which earned Welling their early penalty.

It could have been worse for the Addicks moments later when Joe Healy turned their defence inside out before his shot came out off the inside of the far post.

Rhys Browne fired over for Charlton before Sam Corne did likewise for the hosts.

Joe Pigott might have done better when sent away by a long pass from Wiggins but shot wide and Butcher saved from Simon Church just before the break.

Chris Solly put in a series of excellent crosses for Charlton in the second period but Zak Ansah and Loic Nego were unable to make the most of them.

They were made to pay for the missed chances when Welling doubled their lead, Ashikodi finishing off the best move of the match.

Johnnie Jackson’s long shot brought a straight forward save from Butcher before Kiran Kinde made an outstanding double tackle to keep Charlton out.

There was still time for Morgan Fox to shoot over and for a Jackson shot to beat the far post before Callum Harriott also failed to hit the target in the final minute.
