If you Google Joe Healy and Welling United, the most outrageous of finishes will pop up on your screen of the midfielder scoring a spectacular goal against Grimsby Town.

And the strike earned Healy the Huck Nets Goal of the Season award at the Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards award this week.

The all-important strike from the former Millwall youngster came up at Grimsby on December 10. At the time it looked like earning the Wings all three points from a side who had just booked their place in the FA Cup third round and were firmly in the play-off places.

Top scorer Ross Lafayette set up Kurtis Guthrie to cross from the right touchline and Healy was lurking in the middle just in front of the penalty spot.

The 27-year-old gave his marker a gentle nudge as the ball came in, controlled it on his chest, flicked it up with the big toe of his left foot as another defender looked to clear.

As he lost his balance falling away, Healy lifted his right boot to execute a quite magnificent scissor-kick into the top corner of the net.

Healy said: “To win goal of the season is fantastic.

“You don’t really dream of scoring good goals but to have it recognised by people and recorded makes me very proud.

“I don’t remember too much really. I headed towards the box because the ball was out wide.

“It was a good delivery from Kurtis Guthrie.

“There were questions of a foul on their midfielder but to be honest I was just trying to bring the ball down in the box. It was a good first touch and the rest of the goal was made up for me.”

He added: “I was just as surprised as most people to see it go in.

“I watched the goals, and even with regards to people saying it was one of the greatest goals, I watched the others and thought they were just as good so I am immensely proud.”

Many of the 2,500 home fans inside Blundell Park sportingly applauded a brilliant piece of skill and although the gloss was taken off the night slightly for Healy with a late Grimsby equaliser, one national paper asked its readers whether it was the best Conference goal ever.

There were a few stand-out performers in the Wings’ first Conference campaign in 13 years, but Healy scored ten times and could have conducted his own best goal competition for every month of 2013-14.
