Having won the Conference Premiership on Tuesday through Cambridge United’s defeat, Luton Town celebrated with victory at Welling United.

Jake Gallagher’s return from suspension allowed Welling to push Josh Wakefield into a more attacking role whilst Tom Bender was selected at left back ahead of Jack Obersteller.

Quade Taylor had a first time volley saved by Mark Tyler after a good move involving Joe Healy and Ross Lafayette.

Harry Beautyman then played a delightful ball to Loui Fazakerley but his low cross from the bye-line was bundled away by former Wing Fraser Franks.

Alex Wall thundered a free kick into the defensive wall before firing the rebound high and wide.

Mark Cullen shot wide for Luton then Wakefield failed to hit the target at the other end after Healy’s shot was blocked out too him.

Cullen made no mistake when the next chance came his way, slotting beyond Lee Butcher with 28 minutes gone.

Taylor was injured and had to be replaced five minutes later. Obersteller replaced him, slotting in at left back, and Bender moved into the centre of defence alongside Blaine Hudson.

Andre Gray hit a first time shot that was saved easily by Butcher as the half drew to a close but there was still time for Welling to create one final opening.

Tobi Sho-Silva sent Lafayette away but he could not find a way around Steve McNulty.

After Fazakerley’s long ball was claimed by Tyler, Luton put the Wings under pressure and Butcher kept the Wings in the game with a string of saves.

First he was out sharply at the feet of Gray before the Hatters’ ace sliced another effort wide of the near post.

Butcher’s best save was a brilliant point blank effort to turn away Cullen’s fierce close range shot before he made another sharp save at the near post from Gray.

Despite his best efforts, Butcher was beaten again when Gray appeared to foul Fazakerley before holding him off and finishing crisply.

Welling came back and when substitute Toby Ajala’s attempt was blocked out to Lafayette on the left, Welling’s leading scorer looked up before curling a beauty into the top corner beyond an admiring Tyler.

Healy’s late low drive was well saved by Tyler just inside the post but Luton weren’t troubled again and the 2,000 away supporters acclaimed their teams’ achievement soon after.
