BOSS Liam Daish dubbed it the story of Ebbsfleet’s season after his side conceded a heart-breaking last minute equaliser against fellow strugglers Nuneaton Town at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

A very lethargic first half saw minimal goalmouth action until Tom Phipp gave the home side the advantage 11 minutes before the break.

But after bombarding the Ebbsfleet goal in the second half, Nuneaton finally equalised at the death with an Andy Brown header.

Daish said: “It has been a tough week in a tough season.

“That was the story of our season today.

“We’ve drawn too many games this season, especially at home, through not finishing the game off.

“We are starting to look back over the season and there have been too many points dropped at home.”

Ebbsfleet went into the match on the back of last Wednesday’s horror 24-hour round trip to Barrow, which was caused by a baked beans spillage on the M6 motorway.

Daish admitted: “I think the conditions and what led up to the game regarding midweek didn’t help.

“Also the pitch was very lively, so it was difficult to get the passing going.”

The first action in a subdued first half came just after five minutes when Delroy Gordon headed weakly over from a James Armson free-kick.

What ensued was a 20 minute period of long balls, misplaced passes and a general lack of quality.

Nevertheless Louis Moult, the stand out player in the first period, carved himself two openings.

The first was a volley from the edge of the area which just dipped over, the second a rifled strike from just inside the box which Preston Edwards did well to save at his near post.

Phipp gave Ebbsfleet the lead on 34 minutes.

A Phil Walsh free-kick led to a scramble in the box, which was not cleared well by keeper Lee Burge.

The ball fell to Neil Barrett on the edge of the area and Phipp’s scuffed volley looped over the stranded keeper before falling into an empty net.

Nuneaton had two half chances before the break with Wes York forcing a good save from Edwards and Brown heading harmlessly over.

Jack Saville had a header saved by Burge following a deep corner from Gareth Gwillim on the hour but from then on it was all Nuneaton Town.

Gavin Cowan headed against the bar for the away side, Brown again couldn’t hit the target moments later with a headed effort before York nodded onto the post in the 80th minute.

Ebbsfleet were saved by the woodwork for the third time with five minutes to go as Brown volleyed onto the bar.

But they were finally undone in the 90th minute when gave away a free-kick on the edge of the area.

Tom James whipped a wonderful delivery to the far post and Brown finally hit the target to grab his side a deserved equaliser.

Daish said: “Our whole season we have not defended well enough and conceded too many goals.

“Collectively our centre halves haven’t shown the consistency needed throughout.”

On the topic of whether or not Ebbsfleet will avoid the drop, Daish added: “It is looking tough.

“Whether this league is too strong for us as a club, the travelling, our status I don’t know? “I’m not trying to make excuses but a hell of a lot has one against us this year.”
