DESPITE going a goal down after just 17 seconds, relegation-threatened Staines Town deservedly fought back to inflict a defeat on Bromley at Wheatsheaf Lane last night.

Devoid of any ideas, Bromley failed miserably in matching their struggling opponents for effort and, as a consequence, found themselves under constant pressure.

Bromley went ahead without a Staines player even touching the ball. From the kick-off, Max Noble played the ball through to Elliott Buchanan, who fired home from the edge of the area.

Staines’ Doug Bergqvist then shot over before Jordan Brown forced a save from Joe Welch at the foot of the post, while Ashley Lodge wasted two good chances by shooting over from good positions.

Bromley should have increased their lead on 15 minutes when Mike Jones was floored in the area by Jerel Ifil, but Danny Waldren’s tame spot-kick was comfortably saved by Jack Turner.

The home side might have equalised on 21 minutes when they had three attempts on goal from a corner kick, but somehow Bromley managed to scramble the danger away.

Jones’ shot on the turn was just off target in an isolated Bromley attack, while at the other end David Wheeler fizzed an effort just wide of the upright with Welch struggling to get across.

The home side equalised on 42 minutes, which was no more than they deserved. A Bromley corner was cleared upfield where Jack Holland was easily dispossessed on the touchline by Jack Mills, whose cross was finished by Tyrone Marsh past a static Bromley defence.

Louis-Rae Beadle shot wide in the first minute of the second period and Wheeler saw his effort drop just the wrong side of the bar following a deep cross from the right after Welch had hesitated in coming for the cross.

The visitors fell behind on 62 minutes when Aaron Rhule allowed Lodge to run 25 yards before crossing to Beadle, who found the net from close range.

One would have thought the goal might have spurred Bromley to up their game a little, but as it was they never had a worthwhile shot on goal in the whole of the second half.

They fell further behind on 81 minutes when Moses Swaibu sent a clearance straight to Wheeler who accepted the gift to score with a cross shot into the far corner past an exposed Bromley keeper.
