GREENWICH councillors have voted to change the borough’s name to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The change which was voted for unanimously at a full council meeting on Wednesday (July 28), will come into effect from January 3 next year.
It reflects the announcement in January this year that the Queen intends to give Greenwich royal borough status as part of her diamond jubilee celebrations.
Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said: “Greenwich has always taken tremendous pride in the borough’s long history of royal connections with Greenwich, Woolwich and Eltham dating back almost 600 years.
“These connections have been – and remain – a huge influence on Greenwich’s heritage and architecture, and continue strongly right up to the present day.”
He added: “It is a great honour for Greenwich to have this status conferred upon us.”
