Welling first up for Addicks
Last year's annual pre-season friendly between Welling and Charlton (above) produced a 2-0 victory for the Addicks.
Last year's annual pre-season friendly between Welling and Charlton (above) produced a 2-0 victory for the Addicks.

PARK View Road will be the first destination of Charlton's 2008/09 pre-season programme as the Addicks take on Welling United on July 9.

An Addicks XI will also play away friendlies at Dulwich Hamlet on July 9, Ebbsfleet United on July 12, Dartford on July 15, Bromley on July 19, Grays Athletic on July 26 and Aldershot Town on August 2.

The final date has also been reserved for a first-team Valley friendly, potentially against French high-fliers Nancy before the league opener on August 9.

GRANT Basey scored his first goal for Charlton on Sunday only days after signing a new contract until June 2010.

"I'm very pleased to have signed," said Grant, who was first spotted by Charlton's community coaches.

"I didn't expect to play this year at all but I've played nine times and I'm pleased with how the season has gone."

CHRIS Powell scored his first goal in more than six years on Sunday in what was perhaps his last game for the club.

The late substitute was given a rousing reception by the Valley faithful, who could scarcely believe their eyes when he pounced in the penalty area to net Charlton's fourth against Coventry City.

Manager Alan Pardew said: "The reception Chris got was not just because he's a great player, it's because of his character.

"There's a real love for the guy. In all honestly, though, I can't afford to keep him on.

"I'd love to keep him in a coaching capacity but I haven't really got any funds for that."

EXISTING Charlton season-ticket holders have until May 31 to renew their current seat, while all fans have until August 1 to qualify for a free Premier League season ticket in 2009/10 should the Addicks be promoted to the top flight next term.

An adult place for all 23 Championship games is available from £290, while under-18s cost £125 and under-11s are priced £99.

Charlton also confirmed the successful Valley Express service from Kent and Sussex next season will continue to run.

For more information, visit cafc.co.uk or call 0871 226 1905.

THE Valley commercial centre will operate slightly reduced hours over the close season, opening from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. However, these will be extended to 8am to 6pm on weekdays during the season-ticket seat swap week, the date of which has yet to be confirmed.

CORY Gibbs will leave Charlton this summer after failing to make his debut in two years at the club.

Manager Alan Pardew last week revealed the United States international defender, constantly hampered by injuries during his time in SE7, would not be offered a new contract.

Pardew said: "Cory's had terrible injury problems here and unfortunately he's never really got going.

"He will go to pastures new and hopefully have better luck than he did here. I wish him all the best."

FRESH from becoming Charlton's youngest ever debutant against Barnsley on April 26, 16-year-old Jonjo Shelvey made his Valley debut on Sunday.

Scott Wagstaff, 18, also played his second senior match in eight days.

A 2-1 victory for Southampton's reserves against Watford on May 1 meant the Saints just pipped Mark Kinsella's men to the Pontin's Holidays Combination Central title.

Kinsella was at Boreham Wood FC to watch the match.

CRAYFORD'S Eleanor Brain scooped the big £15,000 end-of-season Valley Gold first prize on Sunday, thanks to number 2727.

Tina King, from Bexley (2745), won £500.

The Valley Gold scheme helped five youth players make their first-team debuts for Charlton in 2007/08 and more details can be found at cafc.co.uk or by calling 020 8244 7771.

DANIELLA Farmer claimed her fourth goal of the campaign for the Charlton women's team on Sunday, but the Addicks were beaten 6-1 by Birmingham City in their penultimate match of the campaign.

Charlton finish the season away at league runners-up Everton.
