WELLING went into Saturday's game at Maidenhead knowing all their hard work in recent weeks might count for nothing if they lost at York Road, with both teams placed precariously above the relegation zone.
As expected, the match was a tense affair and little happened in the first 20 minutes as neither team wanted to give anything away.

The deadlock was broken with probably the best piece of football all afternoon.
Ellis Green cut in from the wing and beat two players before a sumptuous pass invited Sam Gargan to round goalkeeper Chris Tardif and slot into the net.
This he did with aplomb.
Maidenhead's Dwane Lee then had a shot easily saved by Jamie Turner and Jermaine Hinds blocked an Orlando Smith effort which could have increased the Wings' lead.
Smith then just failed to pick out Daniel Nwanze before the hosts came close to equalising when, following an excellent save by Turner, Lee was thwarted by a combination of a block on the line and the post.
Welling found themselves pinned back playing into the wind for long periods of the second half, but were sometimes guilty of sitting too far back.
Tardif dropped a free-kick by Richard Carpenter, but there was nobody on hand to take advantage.
The Magpies' goalkeeper then claimed a Green corner unchallenged as the Wings left three players back on the halfway line.
Maidenhead continued to pile on the pressure and only a brave block by Robbie Ryan helped Welling to maintain their advantage.
Substitute Carl Wilson-Denis finally netted for the hosts, only to be thwarted by the assistant referee's flag for offside.
Referee Stuart Burt then enraged the Welling fans as, on a rare foray forward, Smith appeared to be clipped in the penalty area.
Despite not going to ground, Smith was astonished when Burt showed him the yellow card, presumably for simulation.
Wings manager Andy Ford may have felt there was a danger of Smith's justifiable frustration getting the better of him and substituted his player immediately.
With the clock running down, and Maidenhead being reduced to hopeful efforts from long distance, Welling had a good chance to finish the match as a contest.
A delightful Carpenter cross just evaded the head of the onrushing Gargan with the goal at his mercy.
This proved to be the last notable action as Welling's back to back 1-0 wins moved them up to 16th place.
