Council backs Ebbsfleet's Trophy bid
GRAVESHAM Borough Council is signalling its support for Ebbsfleet United ahead of next Saturday's Wembley FA Trophy final.
The mayor of Gravesham, Pat Oakeshott, is unveiling a banner on the front of the civic centre in Windmill Street, Gravesend, bearing naval signal flags spelling out the message "Come on the Fleet". The civic centre was designed to resemble a ship and the banner will be flying from the bridge above the entrance.
Gravesham council's logo is also a ship representing the borough's maritime past.
The council has already urged businesses to support the Fleet and continue to fly St George's flags in support as they are the same colours as the Fleet team strip of red and white.
Council leader Mike Snelling said: "The whole borough should be very proud of its football club, which has managed to reach a Wembley final for the first time in its history.
"The club has really put the borough on the map and we owe it to them to demonstrate the borough's pride in them."
Greg Bettles, commercial executive at Ebbsfleet United, said: "We are delighted and very grateful Gravesham Council is supporting the Fleet.
"There is a real sense of pride buzzing around the community at the moment and everyone connected with the club cannot wait for May 10.
"It is going to be a fantastic day for the whole community.
"We really hope the public will fly their flags in support and fly them with pride."
More than 100 people have given a sign of support by signing an online book of good wishes on the council's website, with the best message set to win two tickets for the final.
