Wembley joy for Hawes

A FOOTBALLER from Petts Wood came off the bench to make his Wembley debut for the England under-18 side.

Jason Hawes, 18, an A-level student at Bromley's Ravens Wood School, was introduced in the 67th minute of the England v Scotland clash at the national stadium on April 26.

England were leading 1-0 when Hawes made his entrance and the Dulwich Hamlet player made an impact by having two shots on goal in the game which the Three Lions eventually won 2-0.

He also picked up a booking from Premier League referee Howard Webb in a game which attracted more than 20,000 spectators, including a large Ravens Wood contingent.

It was Hawes' sixth international cap and the midfielder scored the goal which secured his country a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Villareal before this year's home nations tournament.

Victories against Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales secured second spot for England, although a 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland meant it was the Irish who eventually won the tournament.

Hawes is attracting interest from several American universities who specialise in sports degrees, although the talented footballer will wait until completing his studies at Ravens Wood before making any decisions on his future.
