Cup joy for Bexley

Bexley Sports Club 1-0 FC Elmstead

BEXLEY Sports Club won the Bob Snow Memorial Cup on Sunday, leaving FC Elmstead with the consolation of the first division title.

In what had potentially looked an exciting meeting on paper with FC Elmstead flying high at the top of the first division and Bexley Sports Club doing likewise in the second division, the final failed to live up to expectations.

The first half saw Bexley Sports Club dominate possession and control the game, but they were thwarted by some dogged defending on the part of Elmstead.

Reminiscent of a boxer taking the fight to its opponent without landing any punches, the closest Bexley came was a couple of haymakers well wide of the mark.

For all their defending, Elmstead failed to have a shot on target at all in the first half.

The second half started and whatever was said in the changing rooms certainly made an impact as there was a lot more purpose from both sides.

Elmstead won a free-kick just outside the box and it was fantastically saved by the Bexley keeper, who just got his fingertips onto the ball to tip it against the crossbar and allowing a defender to clear the danger off the line.

Bexley broke swiftly down the left and a cross came in to the area where Elmstead's left back controlled the ball with his hand.

The resulting penalty was calmly slotted home by Stephen Graham for the only goal of the game.

One would imagine Elmstead would have been stirred by going a goal down.

Instead they totally lost their heads, resulting in two of their players being sent off for differing misdemeanours.

Bexley controlled the game to the final whistle and ran out more comfortable winners than the 1-0 score suggests.

There was one twist left in the tail with the man of the match award going to the Elmstead goalkeeper for keeping his side in the game.

The cup was lifted high by Bexley captain Piara Dhooper along with manager Bob Singh.
