Lillies crash in the valleys

Newport County 3-1 Bromley

A VERY loose performance by Bromley at Newport County on Saturday led to their downfall as they went down to defeat on their first ever visit to the south Wales club.

The hosts got off to the perfect start as the charitable Bromley defence failed to deal with a cross from the left and Andy Gurney, completely unmarked, ran in to head past a stranded Gareth I Williams in the Bromley goal in the second minute.

Bromley fought back well and Gareth A Williams restored parity 16 minutes later when he picked up possession in the centre circle and ran unopposed to crack a left foot shot past goalkeeper Glyn Thompson from just inside the area.

But the visitors were always susceptible to the home side's frequent bursts and their accurate and pinpoint crosses, and it was from one of these Newport regained their lead.

Sam Woods was outpaced and Jason Bowen whipped in a cross which Charlie Griffin was able to poke home after Williams had parried his initial close range header.

G A Williams missed an easy chance on 40 minutes to level the scores and Danny Hockton missed an even easier opportunity four minutes later when he scooped over the bar from 10 yards out.

Griffin clipped the crossbar before half-time after the Bromley goalkeeper had flapped at another cross.

The second half was a more one-sided affair as the hosts dominated.

However, Omai Coleman, Simon Osborn and Hockton should have made better of early chances to level the scores.

Bobby Bowry and Jerrome Sobers were guilty of slack passes which presented the hosts with opportunities and Mark Corneille made two goal line saves as the home side turned the screw.

It was no surprise, therefore, when Newport increased their lead on 73 minutes.

An attack down the right was switched to the left and Evans delicately chipped to Gurney, who picked his spot for his second of the afternoon.

Bromley huffed and puffed for the remainder of the game but could make no impact and in the end returned home from the valleys a well-beaten side.
