Tom Elliott’s brace saw Millwall comfortably beat Stevenage 2-0 in the first-round of the Carabao Cup.

Elliott’s second-half headers capped off a dominating display from the frontman.

Stevenage created very little openings, and could not breach Millwall’s defence.

Millwall boss Neil Harris made nine changes to the team that lost to Nottingham Forest on Friday, with George Saville and Jake Cooper retained.

And the first chance of the game fell to Cooper, whose header forced Stevenage goalkeeper Joe Fryer into an excellent save.

Millwall should have been in front on 23 minutes when Fred Onyedinma headed Mahlon Romeo’s cross straight at Fryer.

Stevenage played some easy-on-the-eye football at times in the first-half, and it would have brought them an opening goal if it wasn't for Millwall number two Tom King.

The keeper produced a fine double save to deny Chris Whelpdale and Matthew Godden. He had initially spilled Whelpdale’s effort, but recovered well to stop the follow-up.

One blow for Millwall on the night was losing Cooper to a suspected muscle injury in the 35th minute. The big centre-half will be an early doubt for the Lions’ league match with Bolton on Saturday.

Stevenage started the second-half brightly, with Mark McKee shooting over from just outside the box.

But the Lions grew as the half wore on and took the lead in the 54th minute when Elliott connected with Onyedinma’s dinked cross to head home on his first start for the club.

Elliott, who joined the Lions in the summer on a free transfer, grabbed his second in almost identical fashion, heading in Shane Ferguson’s cross with 23 minutes remaining.

David Worrall could have extended Millwall’s advantage late on, however, his close-range effort flew over the bar.

The second Lions goal killed the game for Stevenage, and Millwall comfortably held on.
