Byron Webster has revealed the reason behind the bike photo taken of himself and team-mate Jake Cooper in May.

The Millwall defenders were snapped riding "Boris Bikes" in central London just hours after their League One play-off final triumph.

And Webster, who left the coach with Cooper to get something to eat, said the pair used the bikes to get to their hotel to save money.

He said: “I’d done a drug test after the final and I was starving. I needed some food. I didn't feel really well on the bus.

“The bus was taking ages to go through central London and I needed to get off and get some food. I jumped off and Coops was behind me.

“We had some food and I was like ‘how are we going to get to the hotel?’ He said we could order a taxi, and obviously as a northerner, I’m tight, so it was going to be expensive getting a black cab.

“There were some Boris Bikes outside, £2.50 for two and we thought ‘deal’. We got on the bikes and went.

“I didn’t realise we’d got pictured with it, but I thought you could just dump them anywhere but you have to find places to put the bikes back. It was miles away, where we had to dump them, and I got cramp in my quad so it was a bad idea.”

Webster is expected to start in the heart of the Lions’ defence when they travel to Nottingham Forest on Friday night.

The big centre-half was part of the Millwall team that suffered Championship relegation in 2015, and reckons the club’s summer signings will add quality to help them avoid the drop.

The Lions have signed Cooper, Jed Wallace and George Saville for undisclosed fees, while Conor McLaughlin, James Meredith, Tom Elliott and Ryan Tunnicliffe arrived on free transfers.

Webster, 30, added: “A lot of players came in that year [2014-15 campaign] whereas in the last two years we've kept the majority of our squad.

“The gaffer has added a few new faces this year, but the people he’s brought in, you can see their quality. He’s brought in two full-backs who were named in the team of the year for League One.

“In the last two years, we’ve always had a good group, there’s banter on and off the pitch and we enjoy it.

“Does that have anything to do with winning week in, week out? Possibly. So, if we come into the Championship and struggle, it may not be a good place to be! But at the minute, we’re enjoying it and we get on well.”
