Millwall’s penultimate pre-season game ended in a 0-0 draw with Stevenage on Tuesday evening.

The Lions wasted multiple chances to score, with boss Neil Harris saying they could have netted six or seven goals.

Fred Onyedinma came closest, hitting the post in the first-half.

Here are five things we learned…

Performances are starting to improve just at the right time

Harris was much happier with his side’s performance at Stevenage, stating that the only thing missing was a goal.

His side totally dominated the game, but couldn’t break the stubborn League Two outfit and when they did, they were thwarted by the impressive Fyrer in the Stevenage goal.

The tempo went up a notch from their sloppy display at Barnet on Saturday and Harris was pleased with their sharpness and pace on the counter-attack.

Finishing needs to improve

Fred Onyedinma and summer signing Tom Elliott must have left the Lamex Stadium scratching their heads after both players were guilty of missed chances.

Onyedinma scored just three league goals in 42 appearances in the 2016/2017 campaign and four in the season before and it is easy to see why. He lacked composure when in front of goal and looked a bit uncomfortable playing as a striker. The 20-year-old is much more suited to a deeper role.

As for Elliott, he held the ball up superbly, but much like his playing partner, lacked any sort of authority when chances fell his way.

The goals will come

Harris was not worried by the amount of missed chances and if you consider Millwall were without their two top scorers, you can understand why.

Steve Morison and Lee Gregory will most likely come back into the side for Saturday’s game against Granada and not only do the pair provide goals, they offer experience which will no doubt prove key for Millwall this season having both played in the Championship before and scored goals at this level.

Their goals in League One last season amassed for 40 per cent of the club’s goals, including Morison’s crucial play-off final winner against Bradford at Wembley.

Wallace impresses the boss

The pacey winger showed everyone why Harris was keen to capture him on a permanent deal this summer after impressing during his loan spell from Wolves.

The 23-year-old was the stand out player against Stevenage. He looks comfortable beating a man and his unpredictability makes him a nightmare for defenders. A huge positive for Harris, as Wallace initiated the majority of Millwall’s attacking play.

Perhaps he has played his way into the starting XI for Millwall’s trip to Nottingham Forest a week on Friday.

Webster + Nelson worked well together

Both looked like they were out to impress after a disappointing performance from Shaun Hutchinson at Barnet on Saturday and that’s exactly what they did.

They formed a solid partnership at the heart of the Lions defence, limiting Stevenage to mainly long-range efforts. The one time they were unfortunately caught out due to a deflection, they were bailed out by some last ditch defending from Mahlon Romeo. Both were immense in the air.
