Ben Thompson admitted Millwall failed to reach their standards in the play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Lions were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Barnsley to ensure they face another campaign in League One.

Millwall finished the regular season seven points above the Tykes but their depleted defence failed to deal with Barnsley’s attacking threat.

Thompson, a boyhood Millwall fan, told News Shopper after the game: “It’s absolutely gutting.

“We came here hoping to win obviously and for it all to go our way but it wasn’t to be. Nothing was going for us.

“Barnsley played well on the day. They came here and wanted it more than us. We didn’t play to our normal standards and that’s frustrating.

“They played well and deserve a lot of credit but we were not up to our standards.”

Millwall lost defender Byron Webster to injury just minutes before kick-off and left-back Joe Martin hobbled off midway through the first half.

Thompson insisted it was a blow to lose the duo, who have been in superb form all season, but said the side should have coped with the setbacks better.

When asked whether he feared it was not going to be Millwall’s day when Martin followed Webster to the treatment room, Thompson said: “It did feel like that a bit.

“We had players to come in and replace them but having two players lost through injury is a big blow to start off the game.

“Our defence wasn’t as full as it can be but at the end of day we’ve got to go out there and do a better job than we did.”
