Millwall boss Neil Harris insists the club have built foundations despite their 3-1 play-off final defeat to Barnsley at Wembley.

Ashley Fletcher’s goal after just 88 seconds, followed up by Adam Hammill’s 25-yard strike did the damage in the first 20 minutes.

Mark Beevers halved the deficit before the break, but Lloyd Isgrove’s second-half header ensured the Lions will be spending another season in League One.

Despite today’s disappointment, Harris remained upbeat about Millwall’s future.

He said: “We’re a proper Millwall team.

“We had a lot of disappointment at the start of the season with a huge transition of players over the summer.

“We had a real slow start in the sense of being a Millwall team at the Den.”

He added: “For me, we’ve built the foundations for a period of time to come - the players have put a pride back into the club.

“They had a couple of difficult years in the Championship, but [this season] we’ve had a real strong finish.

“Today we fell short. Myself, staff and players have learned along the journey to today - that’s one thing that won’t waver.

“My players will be better next year and I’ll be a better manager.”

Millwall barely troubled Barnsley's keeper Adam Davies, with Chris Taylor’s strike late on, the only real save he had to make.

Dangerous strike duo Lee Gregory and Steve Morison were handled well by the Tykes’ defence.

Harris said: “We lacked a bit of quality at times today.

“A lot of second balls that Steve [Morison] flicked on didn't come our way.

“But, credit to Barnsley for dealing with that.”
