Neil Harris confirmed Millwall would appeal Mahlon Romeo’s red card after the Lions beat Gillingham 2-1.

The young defender was shown a straight red for a late foul on Brennan Dickenson – although there appeared to be minimal contact.

Harris said the dismissal was “harsh” and that he would be appealing this week.

“I think it was harsh. I thought he went in for the ball,” Harris said.

“At the time I thought it definitely wasn’t a red card. Having looked at it again I can see why the referee thought it was a bad tackle.

“There’s no contact on the player, he goes for the ball, so we will certainly be appealing because there’s no contact.

“You have to think about the context – the atmosphere was extremely hostile for my players.”

Harris added: “I thought there were some tackles that were lucky not to be yellow carded.

“The incident with Bradley Dack – he was lucky to stay on the pitch. One young man got away with it, one didn’t.

“I’ll speak to the referee and we will see if our appeal has been successful over the next few days.”

The Lions took the lead through Aiden O’Brien, but were pegged back in injury-time as the Gills looked to have clinched a point.

However, Lee Gregory was brought down in the box and slotted home a 97th-minute penalty to claim all three points.

During a dramatic finish to the match, Harris was also sent to the stands following Romeo’s dismissal.

The Millwall boss added: “I shouted across to the referee, I wanted him to tell me why he [Romeo] was sent off.

“He thought I was being hostile towards him. I’ve seen far worse, ten times a game.

“I feel harshly done myself but I’ll speak to the referee to make sure he knows there wasn’t anything hostile.

“We will have to see how Mahlon progresses because he’s obviously an upset young man right now.”
