Neil Harris hailed his Millwall side after they met his demand to beat Gillingham today.

The Lions clinched a 2-1 win at the Priestfield Stadium to ensure they go into the play-offs on the back of four straight wins.

Gillingham looked to have rescued a point in injury-time, but Lee Gregory slotted home a 97th-minute penalty to claim the three points.

Harris said: “We’re buzzing and absolutely delighted. I’m delighted because I demanded a victory from them today.

“I demanded a victory because this was a real test of character and mentality – I’m delighted for them.

“I said to the boys I wanted a performance and to finish with three points.

“This was a massive hurdle, if you finish with more than 80 points – that’s an unbelievable achievement.

“With four wins in a row, we couldn’t be in better form going into the play-offs.”

Millwall almost went ahead on 20 minutes when Mark Beevers’ effort was saved before former Gills defender Joe Martin struck the bar.

Jordan Archer was tested minutes later as Deji Oshilaja rose well to head straight at the stopper.

A lovely move involving Ben Thompson, Chris Taylor and Aiden O’Brien gave the Lions the lead shortly after the break.

Taylor’s cross found Steve Morison and while his shot was blocked by Stuart Nelson, O’Brien drilled home the follow-up.

Romeo was sent off for a late challenge with five minutes remaining, before Gillingham equalised in injury-time through John Egan.

It proved to be futile though as Lee Gregory won a 97th-minute penalty and fired past Nelson for a dramatic victory.

Having lost to Gillingham 3-0 at the Den before Christmas, Harris admitted today’s victory was a sign of the progress his side have made.

He said: “It does, yeah. Although I thought the progress was huge before the Gillingham game.

“This shows the importance of 46 games – we’re really built over a period of time.

“How far we’ve come since October is pleasing – the mentality has shifted and that’s what I’ve praised them for.

“That’s the best game we could have asked for today – the tempo, the atmosphere – it puts us in a nice position going into the play-offs.”

Millwall will take on Bradford in the semi-final and Harris hopes his players will relish the chance to play at the Den on a momentous day for the club.

“I want my players, especially my young players, to experience the Den in a play-off game,” he said.

“The older guys have experienced that. It will be an unbelievable experience for all my players.

“Four wins in a row just carries us into next week.”

Millwall travel to Bradford for the first leg of the semi-final next Sunday.
