Byron Webster has admitted Millwall boss Neil Harris was right to criticise the players’ attitude after their draw with Colchester a week ago.

Harris was fuming after Millwall followed up a 2-0 win against table-toppers Burton Albion with a lackluster display against relegation-battlers Colchester last Saturday.

The Millwall boss questioned his players’ commitment to preparation and saw a response to his words this weekend as the Lions produced a wonderful second-half display to dispatch Shrewsbury 3-1 at the Den.

The result lifted Millwall up to 4th in the League One table and Webster has revealed it was Harris’ no nonsense attitude that got the Lions back on track.

He said: “I think when you are doing well complacency or something creeps in.

“We are a happy group because we are winning and doing well. I’d say we are putting the work in, but maybe when it is time to concentrate a little bit on set plays for instance – we have not been messing about but there’s a bit of banter going on.

“It’s not a thrilling part of training, but it is something really important [set plays]. But this week, the manager brought it to our attention and it was not a nice thing.

“He should not have to bring that to our attention. The training is always hard, but this week where we could have had a joke doing set plays, we didn’t.”

Webster was disappointed after the game with Shrewsbury’s early goal as it was the first his side have conceded at home for 455 minutes.

The 3-1 fightback looked a long way off at half-time as the players were booed off the pitch by the frustrated home supporters.

Webster understood the frustration, but knew it was only because Millwall have been so good recently with just four defeats in 19 league matches.

“We are enjoying it as a team, as a back four. We’ve come to the point where we are disappointed to concede and especially at home,” the 29-year-old said.

“It’s the first time in a while. It’s disappointing, but only because of the standards we set ourselves and that is only a positive thing.”

Webster added: “It was just frustration [half-time boos] because we had set standards after we had been doing well. So when we dropped blow them standards we are going to take some flack and we know that.”

While Millwall have opened up a gap to seventh-placed Barnsley, they remain seven points adrift of the final automatic promotion spot currently occupied by Burton.

On Saturday the Lions travel to Coventry, who have only won one of their last 10 league games.
