After the unfortunate news last week that in-form Jed Wallace had been recalled by parent club, Wolves, some supporters were probably left wondering how long it would take to get over his departure.

As it turned out, 95 seconds was enough time for the Den faithful to proclaim “Jed who?!” as his replacement, Chris Taylor crashed home the only goal of Saturday's victory over Sheffield United.

Taylor, now in his second spell at the club, is a player I always admired when he was last here.

His departure in 2013 was overshadowed, understandably by the high profile resignation of manager, Kenny Jackett.

I’m not suggesting that had he stuck around we wouldn’t be where we are today, but I do believe we’ve missed a tenacious presence in midfield so it’s good to see him back in a Lions’ shirt.

Although not an out-and-out winger like Wallace, he still has a touch of quality which will surely benefit us as we approach the business end of the season.

Special mention from the weekend must also go to youngster, Ben Thompson. I’ve spoken previously about how much he has impressed in recent weeks.

But after the odd appearance here and there earlier in the campaign, Thompson has finally cemented his place in the starting XI.

Us fans all love a ‘local lad come good’ story, but I honestly believe his future in the game is bright.

A Tim Cahill/Terry Hurlock hybrid, his performances have epitomised what Neil Harris has gradually created at the club - a hardworking, honest squad with a splash of quality in key areas.

Of course, there’s room for improvement.

It wouldn’t be Millwall without doing things the hard way. We could and should have been out of sight by half-time against the Blades, had Lee Gregory and Steve Morison not both squandered early chances.

In fact, the second period turned into a battle of attrition as we seemed happy enough to surrender possession to the visitors.

However, our game management and work without the ball was excellent and even earned us a rare compliment from United boss, Nigel Adkins.

After a pretty horrendous start to the season, it looks like we’ve finally cracked it on home soil. Dare I say it, I actually look forward to going down the Den these days.

MORE: Team spirit was key to Sheffield win, says Harris

Although the win doesn’t affect our position in the table, it still keeps us in the hunt for automatic promotion.

The next two fixtures will be pivotal in shaping how the season ends as we face a tough trip up to Bradford City before returning home 48-hours later for the televised clash against table-topping Burton Albion.

It has been revealed that David Forde, Shane Ferguson and Jimmy Abdou will all be missing as they jet off on international duty.

News Shopper:

Neil Harris has said he was reluctant to postpone both fixtures as it would have left us to complete the final nine in just 37 days.

Whether or not his decision is vindicated is yet to be seen, but I’m sure things will become a lot clearer by Tuesday morning.

I just hope his choices are better than mine were at Cheltenham Festival last Friday.

Anyone spare some change?
