Having shared the spoils away at Doncaster last Saturday, attention now turns to tonight’s home tie against second-placed Wigan Athletic and a chance for the Lions’ to close the gap on the automatic promotion spots.

The Latics have broken into the top two in recent weeks and recruited well during the January transfer window.

Having seen our own fortunes on the pitch take a turn for the better, this fixture takes on even more significance as we approach the last dozen or so games of the season.

It’s fair to say that games against Wigan have proved memorable over the years.

Depending on your age, the Auto Windscreens Shield final of 1999 may or may not hold strong memories.

However, watching my beloved Lions’ play at the home of football for the first time is as vivid now as it was 17 years ago.

Paul Rogers’ 93rd minute winner not only sent a tiny pocket of Lancastrians into raptures that day, but also sent me home in tears.

Older supporters will have gone through a lot worse following the Lions’ over the years, but as a ten-year-old, that was my first experience of Millwall heartache.

I still recall the taunts made by school friends the following day, although I managed to hold back further tearful outbursts.

To make matters worse, Athletic twisted the knife again by dumping us out of the play-off semi-final twelve months later.

I recently found the footage of that ill-fated trip to Wembley on YouTube.

Even today, seeing that BLATANT handball in the lead up to the winning goal still makes my heart sink.

Fast forward to 2013, and the FA Cup semi-final yielded another defeat.

For a town where rugby league takes centre stage, the football team have a knack of giving me the right hump.

Even in September, we looked to be heading home from the DW Stadium with three points until the hosts salvaged a point in the dying seconds. Sound familiar?

Without putting the mockers on it, I’m expecting this evening’s fixture to be a tight affair.

News Shopper:

With the squad they have at their disposal, Wigan should be winning this league comfortably.

However, a win moves us to within five points of the Latics and seven off top spot.

Burton and Gillingham have had wobbles in recent weeks and will undoubtedly have a couple more before the season is out.

Of the six fixtures coming up in March, four are at the Den.

If we can replicate the recent Peterborough win, there’s every chance of taking maximum points.

Whatever happens come May 8, I just hope there’s not another twist in the Millwall Wigan saga, because I guarantee it won’t end well.
