Byron Webster has called on Millwall to improve their consistency as they look to break into a League One play-off position.

Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 home victory against Port Vale pushed the Lions back up to eighth in the table – one point adrift of a play-off spot.

Since December Millwall have only won four of their nine league games and suffered defeats against rivals Burton, Gillingham and Walsall.

Defender Webster believes the Lions must start “winning ugly” to maintain their promotion push.

“We are a good group of lads and in a decent position,” Webster, 28, said.

“We’re on the coattails of the play-offs and need to go on a run - whether it’s through nice results or ugly ones, we need to pick up the points and make sure we are there at the end of the season.

“The consistency is what it’s all about for us.”

After the disappointment of last Thursday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Oxford, Millwall responded well against mid-table Port Vale to cruise to a 3-1 win.

Lee Gregory made it 12 goals this term with a first-half brace, before Steve Morison wrapped up the result on the stroke of half-time.

Webster said: “Lee Gregory is a real handful in training. He’s very clever at getting his body where the defender wants to be - sometimes that gets unnoticed in games.

“And he’s shown again that he can put the ball in the back of the net.”

The only blip for the hosts was Vale’s 60th minute consolation goal, which came from another set-piece.

Webster admitted that the defence should have dealt with the danger.

“There wasn’t a call from Jordan [Archer], it is up to us to deal with it. It was a good ball but it has come a long way and as a defensive unit we should be dealing with it,” he said.

“We were pretty comfortable at the back and it’s a lot easier when we put the ball in the back of the net. Even though we didn’t score in the second-half we were solid and looked threatening.”
