Aiden O’Brien has been rewarded for an impressive run in the Millwall team with a new long-term contract, which sees the Irishman commit to the club until 2019.

O’Brien, 22, has been an influential figure at the Den this season, scoring 10 goals in 29 matches.

The forward, who has reached 50 appearances for the Lions, was thought to be a potential target for a host of Championship clubs, but says he is delighted to pen a new deal.

“It is great for me and also for my family that a new contract has been signed,” O’Brien said.

“I feel that it's been a good first-half of the season, not just individually but also for the team.

“I can't thank the manager enough for his trust in me on the pitch, which is shown by the amount of games I have played this season.

“My focus remains on continuing to play as much as possible and scoring plenty of goals for Millwall in the future.”

O’Brien’s new deal comes after various reports suggesting Championship and Premier League clubs were interested in signing the forward during the January transfer window.

Manager Neil Harris says it is important for Millwall to secure the future of their star players.

“I am delighted for Aiden that his long-term future with the club has been secured,” the 38-year-old former striker said.

“It is great for the football club because he is a young talent who has been one of our players since a very young age and risen through the Academy ranks.

“Aiden was desperate to stay here long-term and given that he has been one of the key performers this year everyone at the club is pleased that the deal is signed.

“It is great business both ways and we look forward to Aiden being a success in a Millwall shirt for years to come.”

Following Saturday’s vital league victory at Oldham, Millwall’s attentions now turn to Thursday evening’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Oxford at the Den. For reaction and analysis follow us on Twitter @NewsShopperSprt.
